Baltic Science Network in the Baltic Sea Region´s Headlines

Baltic Science Network Recognised by DAAD

On 12 July 2017, the Annual Report 2017 of the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) was presented by Prof. Dr. Johanna Wanka, the Federal Minister of Education and Research, together with Prof. Dr. Monika Jungbauer-Gans, Scientific Director of the German Centre of Higher Education Research and Science Studies (DZHW), and Prof. Dr. Joybrato Mukherjee, Vice President of DAAD.

In the context of the overall Baltic Sea Region mobility landscape, Dr. Dorothea Rüland, Secretary General of the DAAD and Prof. Dr. Monika Jungbauer-Gans, Scientific Director of DZHW, noted BSN as a valuable forum for advancing Baltic Sea Region-wide researcher mobility in the framework of the EU Strategy for the Baltic Sea Region.

Baltic Science Network Showcased to the Policy Area Education Audiences

June 2017 turned out to be a dynamic and busy month for BSN. Discussions in Berlin during the 8th Annual Forum of the EU Strategy for the Baltic Sea Region were followed by the introduction to the Network during the Policy Area Education Stakeholder Seminar in Stockholm which took place on 20 June 2017.

Steering Committee Discusses Potential Areas of Joint Science Excellence

BSN Steering Committee meeting took place back-to-back with the 8th Annual Forum of the EU Strategy for the Baltic Sea Region in Berlin. The meeting was devoted to furthering the on-going discussion on jointly chosen areas for research excellence and BSN position advocacy in relation to the upcoming Framework Programme 9. The exchange of ideas was enriched by an insight in the latest BSN´s commissioned study on Baltic Sea Region areas of academic excellence.

Creating the Future of the Baltic Sea Region Through Macro-Regional Advancement of Excellence in Science

On 12 June 2017, BSN Project Manager Katariina Röbbelen-Voigt took part in the EUSBSR Policy Area Education Coordination Group meeting in order to explain the latest developments of the Network.

On 13 June 2017, the session “Creating the future of the Baltic Sea Region: Better competitiveness through joint research cooperation?” engaged Katharina Fegebank, Minister of Science, Research and Equalities of Hamburg, Prof. Dr. Robert Feidehans´l, Director of the European XFEL, Prof. Dr. Helmut Dosch, Chairman of the DESY Board of Directors, Dr. Kaisa Kononen, Executive Director of BONUS, and Lone Jessen, representing NordForsk, Prof. Dr. Kazimierz Musial, representing the Scientific Foundation Norden Centrum, Dr. Tom Schumacher, Associated Senior Research Fellow at Kiel University, in a discussion on the science excellence in the Baltic Sea Region during the 8th Annual Forum of the EU Strategy for the Baltic Sea Region.

Baltic Science Network Discussed in the Smart Specialisation Context

On 2 June 2017, Riitta Mustonen, Director of Development at the University of Turku, represented BSN during the workshop Moving towards smart specialization 2.0 – added value of cooperating in project platforms in Helsinki, Finland.

Baltic Science Network Discussed Among European Experts of Economics

BSN was presented to the attendants of the international conference “Modelling and Forecasting the National Economy” which took place on 29 – 31 May 2017 in Sopot, Poland. Introduction of the conference attendants to BSN helped to build wider awareness among domain specific researcher community about the Network as a renowned macro-regional initiative, as well as present its goals and planned results.

Baltic Science Network Gathers Before Defining its Priority Areas for National Action Plans

On 26 – 27 April 2017, BSN had the pleasure of being hosted by the University of Turku and Åbo Akademi University in order to discuss the BSN session during the 8th Annual Forum of the EU Strategy for the Baltic Sea Region and prepare for successful BSN´s implementation during the second half of the project.

During the last week of March 2017 BSN was discussed thorough the Baltic States. The BSN Riga Workshop discussions on widened cooperation were followed by the meeting of Education Science and Culture Committee of the Baltic Assembly in Tartu.

Advancing the Transnational Debate on Widened Participation of EU-13 in EU Funded Research Programmes

BSN Riga Workshop paved way for further preparations in developing new approach for a fully-fledged and joint Baltic Sea Region-wide engagement in the upcoming 9th Framework Programme. The workshop provided a panoramic view at the previous Framework Programmes and best practices of Latvian engagement in Horizon 2020 calls for project applications. These presentations were aimed at advancing the discussions among workshop participants regarding potential solutions for widened participation of EU-13 countries in the EU funded research programmes.
