Baltic Science Network Discussed During the CBSS Baltic Sea Science Day 2018

Turku, 25 January 2018: the CBSS Baltic Sea Science Day 2018 took place in the framework of the 5th Rectors´ Conference of the Baltic University Programme hosted by the Åbo Akademi University on the occasion of its centenary celebrations. Baltic Science Network was one of the major topics of discussions.

Baltic Science Network started 2018 by introducing universities across the Baltic Sea Region and beyond it to the recently chosen thematic areas, the latest findings on the Matthew Effect in the European Research Area and the importance of continued implementation of measures tailored for widening participation and spreading excellence.

Baltic Science Network Maps its Evolution Periods

Hamburg, 5 – 6 February 2018: Ministry of Science, Research and Equalities of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg hosted the Baltic Science Network brainstorming seminar. Attendants outlined the Network´s short-, mid- and long-term goals, potential supportive means of spreading research excellence and widening participation through complementary measures tailored for the macro-regional researchers´ mobility.

Baltic Science Network Presented During A Macroregional Seminar

Stockholm, 12 February 2018: Baltic Science Network was presented during the stakeholder seminar tailored for macroregional audiences. Since over the last months Baltic Science Network has produced a wealth of studies and proposed various policy measures, the seminar was a great occasion to invite a broader pool of experts to familiarise with the Baltic Science Network´s findings.

EUSBSR PA Education / HA Capacity workshop and PA Education Coordination Group Meeting

Brussels, 31 January – 1 February 2018: Baltic Science Network took part in both the EUSBSR PA Education/ HA Capacity workshop and the PA Education coordination group meeting in Brussels as flagship in the PA Education and presented its work. During the meetings different formats for organising cross border and cross-sectorial development processes were discussed. Likewise, the meeting attendants exchanged perspectives on how to build efficient monitoring and evaluation systems, how to structure strategic communication and finance transnational development processes

BSN Expert Groups Are Starting Their Work

Hamburg, Spring 2018: As part of the Research and Innovation Excellence Work Package, expert groups consisting of researchers from the fields of Life Sciences, Photon and Neutron Science as well as Welfare State have been nominated by the BSN partner organisations. BSN expert groups will launch their consultations in March and April 2018 in order to discuss joint transnational strategies for scientific excellence in the Baltic Sea Region. The first group to start its work is the expert group on Photon and Neutron Science, which is chaired by Frank Lehner, Head of KIB (International Cooperation and Strategic Partnerships at DESY). The expert groups on Life Sciences and Welfare State will follow suit during spring 2018.

Tallinn, 9-10 November 2017: Baltic Science Network is delighted about its most recent political endorsement expressed by the Baltic Assembly and Baltic Council. The political encouragement is an important incentive and reference point for the on-going work of the Network.

Recent Publications Related to the Baltic Science Network

image 3cBaltic Science Network explorative study “Scientific Excellence: Joint Potentials in the Baltic Sea Region – an explorative study”. It is part of the Work Package 3 “Research & Innovation Excellence” and offers a content-rich insight in the Baltic Sea Region scientific performance from many aspects and metrics. image 4Baltic Science Network Working Paper “Drivers for participation in transnational research cooperation and recommendations for increasing participation of low performing countries/regions in transnational research activities”. It is part of the Work Package 5 “Widening Participation” provides a condensed outlook on the outcomes of the last year´s Baltic Science Network discussions on the subject matter, as well as suggests recommendations for future actions.

image 6Baltic Science Network presents “Baltic Science Network Brings the Baltic Sea Region Towards an Enhanced Functional Proximity & Inclusive Excellence: Key Messages of the Baltic Science Network Working Papers & Studies Published During the First Phase of the Project Implementation

Baltic Science Network is included in the study ‘Macro-regional strategies and their links with cohesion policy: Data and Analytical Report for the EUSBSR’, contracted by European Commission´s Directorate-General for Regional and Urban Policy (DG REGIO) and conducted by a consortium led by COWI company. The overall report ‘Macro-regional strategies and their links with cohesion policy’ is composed of five documents: one core report summarising the main findings of the study and one annex per strategy compiling data and findings concerning each of them. The whole body of analysis assesses to what extent the strategies contribute to coordination and synergies between European Structural and Investment Funds and other EU policies and instruments.
